Beeston Library’s tired and dated interior was failing to engage the local community. A new interior personality was commissioned to tackle negative perceptions. The aim was to create an uplifting, modern place all ages would want to visit, to grow the number of members, visitors and book loans.
Using a simple and bright approach, the feel and perception of the library has been transformed for both users and staff. The interior environment and graphic interventions help guide users intuitively around the building and allow them to find what they want with minimal staff intervention. Bold external signage gives a little taster of what to expect from the interior and invites the community in.
Visitors are up 62,700 in the year since redesign to 184,500 and 235,000 more books have been borrowed. The number of new members leapt 42% and room hire income trebled from £4,800 to £19,000. The new environment and wayfinding signage enable staff to continue to provide excellent customer service despite the growth in visitor numbers, with customer satisfaction impressively at 98%.
