Project: RSPB Maps For All

Client: RSPB

Design: The Way Design

The ‘Maps for All’ project has reshaped how visitors navigate and enjoy RSPB reserves across the UK and complaints about map legibility have dropped 100%.

People with mobility needs had previously felt overlooked at RSPB reserves, and wayfinding and map legibility were a common cause of visitor complaints. Created in collaboration with The Way Design, a new flexible mapping system now helps people of all ages and abilities feel confident exploring.

Delivered through accessible formats (tear-off, digital and on-site signage), the suite of General, Access and Family maps has directly improved visitor satisfaction and reflect RSPB’s commitment to inclusion.

Research shaped every design decision from iconography to trail clarity, ensuring the maps are audience-focused, accessible and effective. A comprehensive toolkit was also created enabling the maps to be easily adopted by any RSPB reserve. All visitors are now empowered to explore within their abilities and 5/5 visitor ratings for ease of wayfinding are up 10% at pilot sites.
